“Raigs de Llum” explores the concept of light as an ephemeral beam of light, an imaginary line that traverses space through its propagation.
This project aims to reflect on the transient nature of light beams and how they can transform our perception of the surrounding environment. With this goal, the idea was to simulated the creation of a beam of light, an ethereal and transient entity in the real world, attempting to draw it into our own reality. The proposal involves constructing a rectangular structure with a weight of 2400 kg, which will be placed in the center of the Plaza Mayor, directly connected to four electric poles via white cables.
The use of these multifunctional poles in the Plaza Mayor of Olot addresses two main needs of the installation. On one hand, it facilitates the precise attachment of the cables at specific points; on the other hand, it enhances the quality of the lighting and, more importantly, amplifies the characteristics of the preexisting environment.
“Raigs de llum” won the Premis d’Arquitetura Comarcas de Girona (COAC) in the Ephemeral Architecture category.
The jury comments that “it is a project that uses the nature of vision and the construction of space as its starting point, through a sequence of rays of light cast from different angles toward the central point of the Plaza Mayor in Olot. With just a single and surprising material – white wire – and the indispensable support of darkness and shadows, the public space is transformed into a seductive nighttime atmosphere, where the sense of luminosity is amplified. This achieves a remarkable goal: allowing the public to rediscover the city through unexpected linear objects that enter their field of vision.”
