“Arquitetura em Madeira” Exhibition

Last January, the exhibition “Arquitetura Portuguesa em Madeira” was inaugurated at the Embassy of Portugal in Japan, Tokyo. This exhibition explores the roots of Portuguese architecture through a contemporary lens and highlights the central role of the primary material: wood. Over the centuries, architecture in Portugal has been intrinsically linked with wood, shaping both urban and rural landscapes and reflecting a blend of craftsmanship and architectural innovation. The exhibition aims to showcase not only the aesthetic and functional aspects of wood in construction but also its cultural and symbolic significance within a new identity of Portuguese architecture.

Through a curated selection of eight projects by renowned architects in the current Portuguese architectural scene, the exhibition illustrates the diversity of approaches, styles, and techniques employed by these architects. Tradition as a starting point leads to innovative results. The exhibition will serve as a space for dialogue, inviting visitors to explore the endless possibilities that wood offers and to consider its fundamental role in the current and future architectural landscape.

“Arquitetura Portuguesa em Madeira” seeks to provoke reflection on the current architectural legacy and question how tradition and innovation can coexist harmoniously, contributing to a sustainable future.
